The Longing of the Barren Field

# 329 - Today we read from Mr 4:14, "The sower sows the word. " (Mk 4:14)

Remember, the key to understanding parables is to look for Jesus. Here, Jesus shows up as both sower and word. He is the source of the Word, and He is the Word and He uses His church to bring the word to the world.

As His agent, we must always remember this chief task of sowing the Word. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Mt 28:19,20) This is the mission of the sower and the purpose of the seed..

It is to conquer souls and bring them to faith in the Christ, the Son of the Living God. As Paul wrote to the church at Rome: “But how are they to call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News! (Rom 10:14,15)

Imagine a barren field. Longing to fulfill its created purpose. If that barren field had eyes, how beautiful the sight of the feet of a missionary bearing the bag of seed. It is the fields only hope for realizing its eternal purpose.

The sower and the seed. The seed is the Word of God and Jesus is the Word. He is the only hope for the barren souls in our world. He is their only hope for realizing their eternal purpose. We all have a role to play in this endeavor of His church. . Let's get on with it!
