Love Is Not Puffed Up

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

The greatest proof of the presence of the Holy Spirit in an individual or a congregation is the expression of agape love. But what is love? Today we’ll continue to look at Holy Spirit directed love as found in the love chapter of the Bible….1 Cor 13!

We pick it up in verse 4: 1Co 13:4, where we have another example of what agape love is not!

1Co 13:4 love is not puffed up,

There is no room in agape love for inflated egos! That is, those people who think more highly of themselves than they ought (Rom 12:3)

This was evidently a problem with the Corinthians because Paul mentions it several times in his letter.

In 1Co 4:6 he warns about interpreting scripture beyond what is written as if you have a “puffed up” better understanding of what God intended in His Word!,he warns the Corinthians “not to think beyond what is written,

This thought, that you have a special revelation concerning God’s Word will inevitably set one against another in the church, and colliding egos never bode well for Christian love and unity! Guard against this he says so “ that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other.

Further, these Corinthians were so puffed up, that they were proud of the fact that they accepted the unrepentant behavior of a man in an incestuous relationship in the congregation!

Paul says in 1Co 5:2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you.

Rather than being sad about this situation, they were reveling in their unbiblical tolerance! To allow someone to continue in their damning sins is not loving, but rather a puffed-up version of “I know better than what the Scripture says.”

Get the self-generated helium out of your balloon and if there be any lifting up, let it come from the mighty hand of God!

1Pe 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,

Love Does Not Parade Itself

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

The greatest proof of the presence of the Holy Spirit in an individual or a congregation is the expression of agape love. But what is love? Today we’ll continue to look at Holy Spirit directed love as found in the love chapter of the Bible….1 Cor 13!

We pick it up in verse 4: 1Co 13:4, where we have another example of what agape love is not!

1Co 13:4 love does not parade itself,

“Strike up the band! Unfurl the banners! Clear the streets and make way for me because I have the evidence of the Holy Spirit in my life!”  Does that sound loving to you?

Let us not forget that the love chapter follows the spiritual gifts chapter and the Corinthians had fallen into the trap of parading their gifts rather than humbly exercising the more excellent way of love.

You have been gifted by God! Don’t brag about it, rather humbly thank God for the gift and humbly use it in service to others to help build up the Body of Christ!

So put the trumpet away and quietly serve! Mt 6:2 "Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

Your exercising of your gift is only doing what you are suppose to do and it is certainly not worthy of a self-honoring parade!

Lu 17:10 "So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.'"

Love Does Not Envy

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

The greatest proof of the presence of the Holy Spirit in an individual or a congregation is the expression of love. But what is love? Today we’ll continue to look at Holy Spirit directed love as found in the love chapter of the Bible….1 Cor 13!

We pick it up in verse 4: 1Co 13:4; love does not envy, in other words, it does not covet.

So here we have a measuring stick of what is not a display of love. As a Holy Spirit filled individual or congregation jealousy is very much out of place. Think about it.

Where did you or that person next to you get their physical and spiritual gifts.  You got them from God. Before He formed you in the womb, He knew the very sperm and egg, replete with all its DNA that He was going to use to craft you BEFORE He formed you. Jer 1:5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations."

Your physical gifts or lack thereof come from God, just as your spiritual gifts came from God when you wee “born again.” Your material blessings also come from God! How did Job put it? Job 1:21 And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD." 22 In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.

To covet what someone else has is a sin against God, because in effect you are saying, “God you don’t know what you have done.”

And of course, the Holy Spirit would never say, “What was I thinking” in His distribution of gifts.  He would be warring against Himself! Therefore, we can say that Holy Spirit love is an absence of envy. It is genuine satisfaction with the hand that God has dealt you.

Sometime I find myself wishing I could preach like pastor X,Y, or Z! How foolish! It would be a man=made distortion of what God has made me to be. Rather than coveting, maybe I should just be thankful that God has allowed me to preach at all!

Useful Benevolence

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

The greatest proof of the presence of the Holy Spirit in an individual or a congregation is the expression of love. But what is love? Today we’ll continue to look at Holy Spirit directed love as found in the love chapter of the Bible….1 Cor 13!

One of the things that showcases love is kindness. (1 Cor 13:4) This kindness is summed up with two words, “useful benevolence.” The key being “useful.”

When the church had just begun to form after the Day of Pentecost, this type of useful benevolence was evident and summed up in  Ac 2:44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common,  45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.

It was all about meeting needs in a useful way. This was proof positive of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the church.

No one is asking you to sell your house and give all the proceeds to your church, but we ought to pause and consider how we can use the material goods that God has blessed us with in a way that is useful to others.

Pr 3:27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in the power of your hand to do so.

And even more to the point we read in  Ga 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

This kindness makes a tremendous impact on those outside the faith as Jesus pointed out in  Joh 13:35 "By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

When you get right down to it, the essence of agape love in the Bible is not necessarily giving people what they want, but it always involves giving people what they need! And that my friend, is useful benevolence! That is kindness.

Love Doesn't Fizzle Out

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

The Corinthian church had all these supernatural gifts that indicated the presence of the Holy Spirit in their midst! And as breathtaking as these gifts may be, if they are displayed without love, they are NOTHING!

NOTHING! They are like a firework in the sky on the 4th of July. Ooh and ahh, but after it is spent, what are you left with?

NOTHING!

So an even more excellent way to exhibit the fire of the Holy Spirit is through love! So let’s find out what this love looks like! First of all,

1Co 13:4 Love suffers long,

Love hangs in there! Using the fireworks analogy, love is a freeze frame of a firework at the height of its display. Love stays in your situation no matter what! It is a sustained ooh and ahh to those on the receiving end and all others who observe it in action.

Only God can love in such a sustaining way and so we pray, “Lord, help me to keep loving even in those times that I want to fizzle out!

The Foolproof Presence of Christ

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

We’re moving on from the “spiritual gifts” chapter of 1 Corinthians to the “love” chapter. The spiritual gifts chapter is like Jesus showing up and saying, “Yoo hoo, I’m still alive, and so are you church!”

And the love chapter is like Jesus showing up and saying, “this is even better proof that I am alive and working in your midst!” This is the “more excellent way to prove my presence in the church!”

I think we sometimes forget that the devil is capable of performing signs and wonders and will use them to deceive even the elect as Jesus affirmed in   Mt 24:24 "For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

What the devil can’t do is love others as God does. God is love, the devil is the opposite. Jesua reminds us that the devil has been and always will be a murderer and a liar.

So “love” is the more excellent way to be the witness of the presence of Christ amongst believers.

A More Excellent Way

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

We’ve been talking about spiritual gifts spoken of in 1 Cor 12, and again, let us not forget their purpose. They are given to exhibit the presence of the Holy Spirit amongst believers, and are used to profit the Body of Christ. The presence of these supernatural manifestations link individuals and congregations to the one true God of the Apostles. They link us to the living Christ. He is risen! He is risen indeed!

These gifts are spectacular, miraculous, and an amazing thing to witness in action amongst believers. They are supernatural proof  of the presence of the Holy Spirit in a church!

But wait! There’s an even better example of the presence of the Holy Spirit amongst believers as Paul asserts in  the last verse of chapter 12! “yet I show you a more excellent way.

That more excellent way, is the way of love expressed tangibly by the saints. So, what does Holy Spirit inspired love look like?

Stay tuned as we will spend some time looking at the different facets of love found in what has become known as the love chapter of the Bible. 1 Corinthians 13.

Spiritual Gifts Part 10 - Discernment of Spirits

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

We’ve been talking about spiritual gifts spoken of in 1 Cor 12, and as we look at them let us not forget their purpose. They are given to exhibit the presence of the Holy Spirit amongst believers, and are used to profit the Body of Christ. The presence of these supernatural manifestations link individuals and congregations to the one true God of the Apostles.

I think a close examination of these “gifts” will show us that they were evidenced in the ministry of the Apostles, and therefore it should not be strange that they would show up in the church at Corinth then, and dare I say even in the church of America.”  today!

These gifts are listed for us beginning in verse 8 and the seventh is the gift of “the discerning of spirits.” It was this gift that allowed Peter to see through the motivation behind Simon the sorcerer’s desire to have the same powers as Peter did. Let’s pick it up in  Ac 8:18 And when Simon (the sorcerer) saw that through the laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,

19 saying, "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit." 20 But Peter said to him, "Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21 "You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 "Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 "For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity."

Isn’t it interesting that Peter names the spirit that has bound Simon? Funny, I would’ve named the spirit of greed, but Peter names the spirit of “bitterness.” Well, the two are closely related.

Perhaps Simon was bitter over the fact that he didn’t think he was wealthy enough. He was bound by a fixation that others were better off than he was. And so this spirit manifests itself in envious greed and covetousness

Pr 14:30 A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones. Bitterness will rot the body from inside out. You don’t want that spirit in your church!

The gift of discernment of spirits is like someone having spiritual antennae that supernaturally pick up and decipher the motivational spirit that is guiding someone’s actions and words! It is a means of protection that God provides for the church to prevent harmful divisions and false teachings.

God knows the hearts of all men. We can’t hide our motivations behind our actions from Him, and this gift is very useful in keeping believers from wandering down paths that would be divisive and separate us from God and His truth!

I hope this brief series on spiritual gifts has been helpful to you, may God continue to grant them as needed in His church today.

Spiritual Gifts Part 9 - Prophecy

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

We’ve been talking about spiritual gifts spoken of in 1 Cor 12, and as we look at them let us not forget their purpose. They are given to exhibit the presence of the Holy Spirit amongst believers, and are used to profit the Body of Christ. The presence of these supernatural manifestations link individuals and  congregations to the one true God of the Apostles.

I think a close examination of these “gifts” will show us that they were evidenced in the ministry of the Apostles, and therefore it should not be strange that they would show up in the church at Corinth then, and dare I say even in the church of America today!

These gifts are listed for us beginning in verse 8 and the sixth is the gift of “prophecy.” –  my Strong’s Concordance defines this word as “to see completely.” It was this gift that allowed Paul to warn of the shipwreck in  Ac 27:10 saying, "Men, I perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives."  11 Nevertheless the centurion was more persuaded by the helmsman and the owner of the ship than by the things spoken by Paul.

The prophecy was to serve as a warning, that went unheeded. Later Paul received another prophecy concerning their fate; Ac 27:21 But after long abstinence from food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, "Men, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss.

22 "And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. 23 "For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, 24 "saying, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.' 25 "Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me. 26 "However, we must run aground on a certain island."

That island was Malta where people needed to see a demonstration of the power of God and they did through Paul’s survival of a deadly snakebite, and numerous healings that took place!

The evidence of this gift being active in the fledgling church was also on display in  Ac 11:27 And in these days prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar.

Still another example from Agabus is found in  Ac 21:10 And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 When he had come to us, he took Paul's belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit, 'So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.'"

Both of these events happened just as Agabus said they would, he “saw completely.” In a sense, God showed him these future events, thus proving he had this gift:

The litmus test for such a prophet is found in  De 18:22 "when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

You can see the value of such a gift amongst believers as it prepares them for what is to come.  You can also see the danger of abuses. So, beware.

On one hand don’t despise this gift,  1Th 5:20 Do not despise prophecies.

On the other be sure to test them using the Word of God as the standard. 1Th 5:21

Test all things; hold fast what is good.

I was on the receiving end of a prophecy years ago. My wife and I were attending a dinner event for a Christian pro-life ministry, At the time, we were wrestling with a decision to leave my radio ministry at WEMI and plant a church.

A young man came to our table and asked to have a private word with me. He told me that the Lord told him that I would have a ministry that would affect thousands of people. He also quoted my life’s verse to me, (Ps 37:4) and I wondered how he could possibly know that!

I took this as a green light to plant the church. Long story short the church plant didn’t work out and after 10 years of meager attendance, we closed the doors.

Was the young man off on his prophecy or did my ticklish ears put my own spin on it? I won’t know that answer until I’m in glory. In the meantime I will do what the Lord has called me to do. Preach and teach His word! Whether I reach just one or thousands of souls I don’t know. I’ll let Him worry about the numbers. In the meantime I will take that prophecy as a sign to keep on keepin’ on as long as the Lord wills.

Spiritual Gifts Part 8 - Works of Miracles

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

We’ve been talking about spiritual gifts spoken of in 1 Cor 12, and as we look at them let us not forget their purpose. They are given to exhibit the presence of the Holy Spirit amongst believers, and are used to profit the Body of Christ. The presence of these supernatural manifestations link individuals and  congregations to the one true God of the Apostles.

,”

I think a close examination of these “gifts” will show us that they were evidenced in the ministry of the Apostles, and therefore it should not be strange that they would show up in the church at Corinth then, and dare I say even in the church of America today!

These gifts are listed for us beginning in verse 8 and the fifth is the “works of miracles” What is a miracle? Is it not a supernatural occurrence that flies in the face of natural law? Again, there is no shortage of these events as recorded in the early church in the Book of Acts.

And it’s not so much that Phillip had the ‘gift of miracles”, when he was transported away from the eunuch in  Ac 8:39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more;

Or when Peter walked out of jail and the iron gate opened for him on its own accord.in  Ac 12:10 When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord;

Rather it’s the idea that miracles will show up as willed by God whenever they are needed to bolster confidence in the Holy Spirit’s presence amongst believers.

These miracles were hard to miss in the days of the early church, but these days they seem to be a little less evident. Part of the problem is we just don’t seem to look for them. We are more comfortable with “coincidences,” than “God-incidences.” And they don’t have to be all that spectacular!

I experienced a miracle in church this past Sunday. It may appear small to you, but I assure it was “big” to me.

I’ve been experiencing tremors in my left hand lately. My hand starts shaking and I can’t control it. It was a communion Sunday at our church and I was asked to help distribute the bread.  I agreed and as the service went on I kept thinking “what have I agreed to do?” I can’t hold onto the tray with this shaking hand!”

I prayed, “Lord help me,” and He did. The tremors stopped and I was able to distribute without incident. You see, I couldn’t stop my shaking hand but God did.

Faith affirming miracles still occur in the church! Look for them and give glory to God as the Holy Spirit works miracles in your midst.

Gifts of Healing Part 7 Gifts of Healing

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

We’ve been talking about spiritual gifts spoken of in 1 Cor 12, and as we look at them let us not forget their purpose. They are given to exhibit the presence of the Holy Spirit amongst believers, and are used to profit the Body of Christ. The presence of these supernatural manifestations link individuals and  congregations to the one true God of the Apostles.

I think a close examination of these “gifts” will show us that they were evidenced in the ministry of the Apostles, and therefore it should not be strange that they would show up in the church at Corinth then and dare I say even in the church of America today!

These gifts are listed for us beginning in verse 8 and the fourth is the “gifts of healing”. Note the plural “gifts” These healings were not just physical healings from physical disease and infirmities, but also spiritual deliverance! The entire book of Acts leaves a trail of such healings wherever the Apostles showed up!

Some examples: Ac 5:16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

Ac 8:7 For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed.

Why don’t we see such a trail in the Christian Church in America? I wish I had an answer. Maybe it’s because many people have been ripped off by money grabbers who claim to have the gift. Maybe we view ourselves as “too sophisticated” for this sort of thing. Maybe familiarity breeds contempt. That seemed to be a problem for the healing ministry of Jesus in His hometown! .

Mt 13:55 "Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? 56 "And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?" 57 So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house." 58 Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

For what it’s worth, I am one who experienced a physical healing in church. I had been diagnosed with shingles and anyone who has had them knows how painful they are. Our church was having a prayer meeting and I mentioned my infirmity and asked for prayer.

People came forward, laid their hands on me and prayed, and I was healed.

Here’s one thing I learned from that incident. When it comes to being healed or delivered from physical or spiritual maladies, Listen to what Jesus said in Mt 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Yes, ask, seek, and knock, then rely on the Lord for results. The healing may be instantaneous, or it might come with the ultimate healing when Jesus calls you home. Either way, you have done your part.

Spiritual Gifts Part 6 The Gift of Faith

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

We’ve been talking about spiritual gifts spoken of in 1 Cor 12, and as we look at them let us not forget their purpose. They are given to exhibit the presence of the Holy Spirit amongst believers, and are used to profit the Body of Christ. The presence of these supernatural manifestations link individuals and  congregations to the one true God of the Apostles.

I think a close examination of these “gifts” will show us that they were evidenced in the ministry of the Apostles, and therefore it should not be strange that they would show up in the church then and dare I say even now!.

These gifts are listed for us beginning in verse 8 and the third is “faith.” This gift of faith is not to be confused with saving faith since all Christians have been given that gift. Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,  9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

The gift of faith here is an extraordinary, fearless trust, in God’s Word that prompts an outward act of obedience led by the inward guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The first incident that comes to my mind in the apostolic use of this gift would be when Peter healed the beggar outside the temple. The beggar was asking for money but listen to Peter’s Holy Spirit led reply: “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." 7 And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.  8 So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them--walking, leaping, and praising God. (Acts 3:6,7)

Later Peter would give credit to this miracle by attributing it to “faith,” He said,  in Acts 3:16,17, "And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

Oftentimes the gift of faith is what kicks the other spiritual gifts into gear. In  this case faith in the Living Christ prompted Peter to exercise this gift, and when he followed the prompting of the Holy Spirit, a healing occurred.

Faith fearlessly pulls the trigger of Holy Spirit promptings and the one who has such a gift, is never left with egg on their face. They always come through, because God comes through. How can they not? Their action has been prompted by God the Holy Spirit!

A person or church with this gift moves mountains that appear to be insurmountable, and it doesn’t take  much, just a mustard’s seed worth, because it is of God  and taps into His power and will.

The gift of faith is an action gift. If it is truly present in your midst, it will show up somehow, some way, and when it does you’ll experience the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Spiritual Gifts Part 5 Word of Knowledge

These gifts are listed for us beginning in verse 8 and the second is “the word of knowledge.” This gift was most evidenced in the incident involving Ananias and Sapphira found in Acts 5.

If you recall the story this husband and wife sold a possession and made it look like they gave all the proceeds to the church, but they held some of it back. Ananias laid the gift at the Apostles feet, but instead of getting a pat on the back, Peter bluntly asks Ananias, “Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?”

How could Peter know of their hypocrisy if the Holy Spirit hadn’t given him this “word of knowledge!” So the word of knowledge is a prompting from the Holy Spirit to take action based on the Spirit’s knowledge of the situation. (That knowledge of course is all encompassing.

Another example was Phillip sharing the Gospel with the Ethiopian Eunuch. How did he know to approach the chariot? He knew by the word of knowledge from the Holy Spirit as we read in  Ac 8:29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, "Go near and overtake this chariot."

This is a gift that will even today prompt prayer for others at the exact time they need it. It may also prompt benevolence for someone with an undisclosed financial need.  It’s a supernatural prompting from the One who knows all and sees all. Don’t blow these “Words of knowledge” off. The Holy Spirit is letting you in on something that only He is aware of. Partner with Him and act accordingly, for the profit of all!

Spiritual Gifts Part 4

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

We’ve been talking about spiritual gifts spoken of in 1 Cor 12, and as we look at them let us not forget their purpose. They are given to exhibit the presence of the Holy Spirit in the congregation and are used to profit all who are present. The presence of these supernatural manifestations link individual congregations to the one true God of the Apostles.

I think a close examination of these “gifts” will show us that they were evidenced in the lives of the Apostles, and therefore it should not be strange that they would show up in the church.

These gifts are listed for us beginning in verse 8 and the first is “”the word of wisdom.” This gift was put on display when Peter and John were brought before the rulers in Jerusalem for preaching Christ risen from the dead, Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit as he spoke.

Notice his application of Scripture to his situation as we pick it up in Acts 4:11, "This is the 'stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.'  12 "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

Who but the Holy Spirit could give such wisdom to a couple of theologically untrained fishermen? This supernatural occurrence was duly noted by the rulers!

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.

So this gift (bold application of the truth of God’s Word by ordinary people) is given to a church as a testimony that Jesus is in their midst.

Personally, I don’t know if I have this gift or not, but my prayer has always been that when I have the opportunity to preach or teach from the Word of God, that it would be said of me. “He has been with Jesus!”  If there be any wisdom in what I say, then glory to God, not to me. As the Reverend Dan Smith has sung, “I’ve never been to seminary, but I’ve been to Calvary. Great song by the way, you can find it on You Tube

Spiritual Gifts Part 3

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

We’ve been talking about spiritual gifts spoken of in 1 Cor 12, and as we look at them let us not forget their purpose. They are given to exhibit the presence of the Holy Spirit in the congregation and are used to profit all who are present.

One of the gifts mentioned here is that of “speaking in different tongues.” This supernatural phenomenon brings up more questions than answers. It’s first occurrence mentioned in the Bible is found in  Ac 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Consider the miracle here. Your tongue taken over by the Holy Spirit of God! Jas 3:8 reminds us that “no man can tame the tongue.”….. but you know what, God can, and He proved it on this day of Pentecost.

There were many different language groups present in the audience that day and they all heard the wonderful works of God spoken in their native tongue! There was “profit for all.”

Then there was the breakout of tongue speaking in the Gentile house of Cornelius’ Upon hearing the gospel, the Holy Spirit “fell” on the Gentiles and they spoke in tongues “magnifying God.” We aren’t told what languages were spoken, but someone there understood it, because the words they used “magnified God.”

This gift of tongues was also evident in the church at Corinth, and Paul uses an entire chapter (14) to talk about its proper use in the church setting.

The first point he makes is that whatever is said in tongues must be understood. Without understanding it is just a bunch of noise to our human ears.

1Co 14:2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks (uninterpreted) mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies (in understandable language)  speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself (builds up his own faith)  but he who prophesies edifies the church. (builds up their faith) 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

Paul encourages speaking in tongues noting the value of self-edification, but he would rather speak words of “thus saith the Lord” (prophecy) in the church setting for the purpose of building up the faith of others.

All I can say about this gift is don’t get all caught up in trying to understand it, if you have this gift you have it, use it with great Holy Spirit led discretion, if you  don’t have this gift, don’t worry about it….not all will speak in tongues. “ ((1 Cor 12:30) As we shall see, there are bigger fish to fry.

Spiritual Gifts Part 2

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

Continuing today on the matter of spiritual gifts as spoken of in 1 Corinthians 12. These gifts were given to the church at Corinth to exhibit (manifest) the presence of the Holy Spirit in their midst. They were proof positive that the God of the twelve Apostles was the same God active in the life of this church.

One of the gifts mentioned here is that of “speaking in different tongues.” Recall, if you will, how the Holy Spirit showed up on that first day of Pentecost. The unlearned Apostles hit the streets speaking the wonderful works of God in all sorts of foreign languages. A supernatural occurrence to say the least!

But that’s not the only time we see this supernatural gift show up. Look what happened when Peter preached the Gospel to the Gentiles in the house of Cornelius!

Ac 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word.  45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

This was indisputable evidence that salvation is for Gentiles too! The evidence was identical to what took place on that first Pentecost! “The people in the house of Cornelius, spoke with tongues and magnified God!

But, let’s be careful here. Speaking in tongues is not the only exhibition of the presence of the Holy Spirit in a church. If you take the time to count the other gifts in this chapter, you will find 8 other evidences as well.

As Paul reminds us rhetorically in 1Co 12:30.  Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?  The answer of course is no!

31 But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

Spiritual Gifts Part 1

I’m Duane Matz and welcome to Today’s Living Word.

1Co 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

What to make of 1 Corinthians 12? And all this talk about spiritual gifts? These Gentile Corinthians experienced manifestations of the Holy Spirit in ways that are completely foreign to many in our Christian world today.

The word “manifestation” here means “exhibition. “ So these “gifts” were meant to be proof of the presence of the Holy Spirit in this body of believers.

Exhibit A: “the word of wisdom” (v8)

Exhibit B: “the word of knowledge” (v8)

Exhibit C: “faith.” (v9)

Exhibit D: “Gifts of healing” (v9)

Exhibit E: “the works of miracles.” (v10)

Exhibit F: “prophecy” (v10)

Exhibit G: “discerning of spirits” (v10)

Exhibit H: “different kinds of tongues.” (v10)

Exhibit I: “ the interpretation of tongues.” (v10)

What is this all about?

A couple of things to make note of, before we move on here. First of all, these “manifestations” were meant to profit all in the Corinthian church. (v7)

These would be extraordinary displays of exhibits A through I that would “profit “or increase the conviction of this body of believers that the living God of the Apostles was in their midst, so they would cease to be “carried away by their dumb idols.” (v2)

Secondly, these gifts were all distributed by the Holy Spirit Himself, “distributing to each one individually as He wills.” (v11) These Corinthians didn’t have the option of “choosing” their gift.

Neither do we.
