# 454 - In Today's Living Word, we continue looking at the matter of divorce and remarriage. As Jesus is teaching His disciples about divorce and remarriage in the Book of Matthew, He says something that really helps clarify this matter of the permanence of marriage.
He said in Mt 19:12, “For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven.”
What did He mean by this in the context of divorce and remarriage? Well, since (1) the biblical model for sex is ALWAYS within the confines of matrimony, and (2) eunuchs are those who are not able to procreate, He was saying that there are people in this world who have had sex removed from their radar screen.
Some may be predisposed by God to not have an interest in marriage, (eunuchs) from birth) others may want to remain single in order to serve the Lord in a special way, (eunuchs for the kingdom) and others are made eunuchs by the decisions of others (eunuchs by men and namely in context here through man's decision to divorce)
This is one of the richest passages in all of Scripture as it concerns sexual purity and God's plan for the permanence of marriage. And for those who have been made eunuchs by divorce, it seems that God may have opened a door for you to serve Him wholeheartedly as those who are eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.
I know this is a tough pill to swallow, and one of the reasons it's so tough to swallow, is that the church has dropped the ball on the teaching of the permanence of marriage. Just as they had dropped the ball in the days of Jesus.
He knew too, that this was a tough pill to swallow! That's why He preceded it in Mt 19:11, with “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given.” BUT having said that He concludes His illustration of the eunuchs by saying, “let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”
What does that tell you? It tells you that the BEST course of action is to receive it. Our ability to receive this saying comes from the Holy Spirit. If He lives and dwells in you, and you are willing, you can receive this saying! Phil 4:13 reminds us that we can do “all things through Christ who strengthens us.” (Phil 4:13)
