Thou Shalt Not Filch?

# 461 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 7:21 "For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, "thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.

Next on the list of “evil things,” is thefts. Another easy one right? A theft occurs when something is stolen. Mention the word robbery or thief and you get a mental image of someone forcefully taking something from someone else. But thievery is much more than that.

It's interesting that the word “theft” here comes from a Greek word that means “filch.” Now that's a word we don't hear too much these days. It means to “appropriate casually.” And to appropriate is to take or make use of without authority or right. Oh boy, I think we all just got caught with our hands in the cookie jar!

How many times have we made a copy of a song or a movie without authority or right? How many times have we carried a ream of paper home from work, or made unauthorized copies on the copy machine? How many times have we filched the company dollar as we tended to personal matters on the internet or phone?

Filching is a sin and just like the preceding sins of adultery, fornication, and murder, it must be confessed. We need to ask Jesus to forgive and then, as in the other cases, “go and sin no more.”

I'm Duane Matz and that's Today's Living Word.
