I’m Duane Matz and
welcome to Today’s Living Word.
The sinners prayer post script! Last
time we talked about the “sinner’s prayer found in Psalm 51. The Psalm was
written by David after the prophet Nathan had confronted him concerning his
adulterous and murderous sins with Bathsheba. David confessed his sin and breaks out with a
plea for a fresh start. “Create in me a clean heart O God, and renew a right spirit
within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence and take not Thy Holy Spirit from
me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold me with Thy free
spirit.”
Too often, in our own lives, we stop here! Thankful for
God’s forgiveness and we leave it at that…..David didn’t stop there and neither
should we. Listen to what he says next! He says, “Lord, as a response to Your
mercy and goodness in (1) cleaning 2) renewing (3) abiding (4) Spirit filling
(5) joy (6) and upholding. Then I
will teach transgressors Your ways! (Ps 51:13)
God’s ways are simple in this regard. People need to hear
the Law, (what’s wrong and what’s right in the eyes of God) Then when they are
convinced of their sin, they need to hear the gospel and receive God’s
forgiveness. Do this and look what happens next! Others will be set free
from the shackles of sin! And sinners shall be converted to you.! (PS
51:13b)
It’s like the Gaderine demoniac. Jesus set him
free from his chains and the now freed man wanted to just stay with Jesus and
bask in His deliverance, “However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to
him, "Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord
has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you." 20 And he departed and began to proclaim in
Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.
Friend, have you been set free from sin? Have
you been delivered from the pit of hell to eternal life in heaven? Well, in the
words of an old Don Fransisco song. “You got to tell somebody.”
