Job 41:3 Will he make many supplications
to you? Will he speak softly to you? 4 Will he make a covenant with you? Will
you take him as a servant forever? 5 Will you play with him as with a bird, Or
will you leash him for your maidens? 6 Will your companions make a banquet of
him? Will they apportion him among the merchants?
God continues to question Job concerning omnipotence. After
all, it’s one of the calling cards of a sovereign God! If Job could exercise this
kind of control over this monster of the deep (who is a type of Satan) then Job
may have a leg to stand on as he complains to God. But we all must admit only
God has that kind of control over Leviathan. (over Satan)
And that’s the point that God the Father made through
Jesus the Son time after time as He walked this earth. Jesus and the Father are
One! Only God has the power and the authority to strike a deal (covenant) with
the devil and his henchmen. Jesus is God in the flesh!
This part of Job was illustrated for us in the
incident between Legion and Jesus found in Mr 5:1-13: It’s a little lengthy but
notice the similarities between these verses from Job and the encounter with
the demoniac!
Then they came to the other side of the sea,
to the country of the Gadarenes.
2
And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the
tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
3
who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with
chains,
4
because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had
been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could
anyone tame him.
5
And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out
and cutting himself with stones.
Chains of iron could not hold this demoniac, but Jesus
comes along and tames him to the point that little children and maidens could
put him on a string and play with him like a bird.
6
When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him.
7
And he cried out with a loud voice and said, "What have I to do with You,
Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment
me."
Immediately, when Legion recognizes Jesus, he
supplicates Him, (he makes a request of Him, “do not torment me.”)
8
For He said to him, "Come out of the man, unclean spirit!"
9
Then He asked him, "What is your name?" And he answered, saying,
"My name is Legion; for we are many."
The demoniac doesn’t scream his answer this time, he
softly replies, “my name is Legion; for we are many.”
10
Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country.
11
Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains.
12
So all the demons begged Him, saying, "Send us to the swine, that we may
enter them."
13
And at once Jesus gave them permission.
Jesus strikes a deal with Legion, (He makes a covenant
with him!)
Then the unclean spirits went out and
entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently
down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.
By now you should understand what’s happening here in
Job. As God is asking for proof of omnipotence and sovereignty, He is painting
a picture of what that will look like when Jesus arrives on the scene. The same criteria that He is demanding of Job
will be met by His Son Jesus…..proving that Jesus is sovereign, all powerful,
and God in the flesh!
May the Holy Spirit reveal that truth to you today, so
that you will make the confession of Peter, when Jesus asked him, “Who do you
say I am?” And Peter replied: “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God!
The proof is in this (dare I say) prophetic portion of the Book of Job.
