One thing about being God…..He has options. He is omnipotent
(all powerful) omniscient (all knowing) and Sovereign. (He is calling the
shots!) He is able to use such things as weather for His purposes, and indeed
He often did that in the Scriptures. The flood is a classic example, but HE
also used drought and storms to serve His purposes.
God used a thunderstorm to frighten Martin Luther into
becoming a monk and history was changed! John Newton was the captain of a slave
running ship and was converted to Christianity as the result of a storm at sea,
and he went on to write the hymn “Amazing Grace.”
Elihu had this to say about God and weather in Job
37:11-13, “Also with moisture He saturates the thick clouds; He scatters His
bright clouds. 12 And they swirl about, being turned by His guidance, That they
may do whatever He commands them On the face of the whole earth. 13 He causes
it to come, Whether for correction, Or for His land, Or for mercy.
Elihu zeroed in on three purposes of God’s involvement
with weather on planet earth! (1) “Whether for correction,” (2) “for His land,”
(to bless it) (3) “for mercy” (toward man and beast.)
He also used weather to vanquish the enemies of
Israel. Jos 10:11tells us: “And it happened, as they fled before Israel and
were on the descent of Beth Horon, that the LORD cast down large hailstones
from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died
from the hailstones than the children of Israel killed with the sword.
Later on in Job we will read of hailstones that God
has prepared beforehand for war! Job 38:22 "Have you entered the
treasury of snow, Or have you seen the treasury of hail, 23 Which I have
reserved for the time of trouble, For the day of battle and war? Now, He tapped
into that treasury of hail to defeat the Amorites, but that’s just a small
sample of the day when the entire treasury will be emptied on the enemies of
Jesus Christ!
That Day is coming when Jesus Christ returns. His
church (believers) safely out of the way as they have met Him in the air, and
those left behind cursing God for His judgement:
Re 16:21says, “And
great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a
talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague
was exceedingly great.”
Have you ever been in a Texas size hail storm? Have
you seen the aftermath? Everything in the path stripped away and what a picture
of the final judgement of those who reject Christ. Everything stripped away! No
leg to stand on. Guilty of rejecting Jesus Christ as the Messiah, the Son of
the Living God and therefore doomed to eternal torment in hell.
You may think that God will be tolerant with you, (after
all, you’ve been a good person right?) but the truth is found in Joh 14:6 Jesus
said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through Me.”
Turn to Jesus now, today while it is still day. The
treasury of hail is full and ready for release. The Day is coming! Are you
ready?
