Ps 74:13 You divided the sea by Your strength; You
broke the heads of the sea serpents in the waters. 14 You broke the heads of
Leviathan in pieces, And gave him as food to the people inhabiting the
wilderness.
We’re continuing this series on Leviathan today, just
gathering what I hope is useful information for you, in the battle against our
evil foe Satan. We have already established that the Leviathan is a very real
creature who is used to personify the devil in the Bible.
In this Psalm of Asaph, we have a reference to, and an
acknowledgment of, the power of God in dealing with Leviathan in the past, and guess
what? The devil lost every single time! As you read the Old Testament history
of Israel make it a point to note how often the devil sought to thwart the plan
of God’s salvation through the incarnate Christ. These plans that ultimately failed, can be
summed up in Joseph’s statement to his brothers: Ge 50:20 "But as for
you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good”
God turned the plans of the devil into futility every
single time, “breaking the heads (the thought patterns) of Leviathan in
pieces!” These pesky attacks of Satan and consequent victories of God were
prophesied way back in the garden of Eden when God told the devil, “And I will put enmity Between you and the
woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you
shall bruise His heel." (Gen 3:15)
The ultimate victory over Leviathan coming at the
cross! The victory so certain that the Leviathan is compared to food for God’s
people who inhabit the wilderness!
Allow me to let you in on a little secret: The true
church of God, the true Israel, is always found in the wilderness, because the
wilderness is the place where one must be truly reliant upon God. (It’s God’s
grace, total reliance on Him that saves us) (Eph 2:8,9)
This passage from the Psalm dealing with Leviathan
ought to bring great hope to the church of Jesus Christ. Because even though we
have a crafty and mean-spirited, menacing foe, in the end, by the power of God, the
church has him for lunch! (food to the people inhabiting the wilderness.)
Acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah like Peter did, and the
Leviathan will not prevail against you! Mt 16:16 Simon Peter answered and
said, "You are the Christ, (the promised Messiah of Gen 3:15) the
Son of the living God." 17 Jesus
answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and
blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18
"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build
My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
