That We Might Serve

# 244 Today’s Living Word comes from Mark 1:29-31, “Now as soon as they had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. But Simon's wife's mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once. So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them.”

Leaving the synagogue, the five head over to Peter and Andrew’s house. But the situation there is not good. Peter’s mother-in-law (yes, Peter was married) is burning up with fever. There is a sense of urgency as the fever is reported to Jesus at once.

So He came to her, rebuked the fever, and as He lifted her up by the hand the fever and all it’s effects left her body. She was so refreshed that she was able to get up and help prepare the meal! The next time you have a burning fever, and you are finally able to get up and feebly wobble around, think about this incident, and know the powerful healing capabilities of Jesus.

When He rebuked this fever, it was as if it was never even there. (He does the same thing with our sins!) And note what she did upon being healed. She served. Jesus heals, Jesus delivers, Jesus forgives, Jesus saves, that we might serve.

I’m Duane Matz and that’s today’s Living Word.
