A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

# 242 Today’s Living Word comes from Mark Mark 1:25-26 “But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!" And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.”

Just as Jesus would in the future, rebuke the winds and the waves on the Sea of Galilee, He rebukes the demon. “Be quiet, (the word literally means “muzzle”) and so the demon immediately ceases from intelligent speech, and the best the muzzled demon can do is let out a loud scream of protest as he convulses his host on the way out.

This physical convulsion is a picture of the spiritual reality of the battle for the souls of men. The devil does not give up easily, yet when confronted with the absolute power of Jesus, the devil has no choice but to obey.

This is the first miracle of Jesus that Mark uses to prove that Jesus is the Christ the Son of the living God. It is biblical proof of that great line from the hymn, “A Mighty Fortress.”The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo! His doom is sure, one little word shall fell him.” That word of course is Jesus, and when He presses into the situation with His grace and power, the sinner is set free.
