God is omnipotent. (all powerful) God is sovereign. (in
charge) Two statements that flow easily off the lips of Christians, but do we
really believe them? Do we agree with statements like the following from Job’s
friend Elihu? Job 34:14 If He (God) should set His heart on it, If He
should gather to Himself His Spirit and His breath, 15 All flesh would perish together, And man
would return to dust.
It would be a complete reversal of what God did in Ge
2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into
his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Which is easier for God? To give His life-giving
breath or to take it away? It’s not a matter of which is easier, it’s a matter
of His omnipotence and sovereignty. He
is able to do both!
This kind of power ought to prompt a proper sense of
fear (the beginning of wisdom) in all of us. As a COVID-19 survivor, I know
what it is like to be short of breath, (maybe God is trying to tell us something
here!)
My breath, my very life is in His hands, and without
His mercy and grace, I would return to the very dust that He used to create
Adam. Therefore I join with the prophet Jeremiah, who said in La 3:22
Through the LORD'S mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail
not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
Might be a good
time to break out the hymnal this morning for this classic:
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father
There is no shadow of turning with Thee
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be
Great is Thy faithfulness, great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me
Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love
Great is Thy faithfulness, great is Thy
faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside
Great is Thy faithfulness, great is Thy
faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me
