Job 5:1 "Call out now; Is there
anyone who will answer you? And to which of the holy ones will you turn?”
Eliphaz continues his pontificating in response to Job
cursing the day he was born. This
cursing is no light matter. To curse life is to curse God Himself. The Potter/clay analogy used in Scripture is
helpful here and there is no shortage of references in Scripture:
Isa
45:9 "Woe to him who strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with
the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him who forms it, 'What are
you making?' Or shall your handiwork say, 'He has no hands'
Isa 29:16 Surely you have things turned
around! Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay; For shall the thing made say
of him who made it, "He did not make me"? Or shall the thing formed
say of him who formed it, "He has no understanding"?
Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father;
We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand.
Ro 9:20 But indeed, O man, who are you to
reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, "Why
have you made me like this?"
In effect, Eliphaz is saying, “If you want to curse
God, for your lot in life, who do you have left to turn to? Is there anyone but
God who can help you in your situation? Do you think the angels will help you?
They are nothing but awed bystanders in the Potter’s shop! They witness what Sovereign
God is doing with each individual and they marvel at His providence as He
always works things out for good for those who love Him and are called
according to His purpose.
Ro 8:28 And we know that all things work
together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according
to His purpose.
Let me pause here and briefly address the increasing
problem of sexual confusion in our world today: It shouldn’t surprise us with
the saturation and fixation of sex in all forms of media in our world today.
Sex is the end all! It’s what really matters. I understand the world’s fixation
with sex, but find it strange that the professing Christian should be so
consumed with something that is temporary and will be completely absent in
heaven.
Mt 22:30 "For in the resurrection
they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in
heaven. (celibate)
In this matter
of sexual confusion, we need to get an eternal perspective! Eternity is a lot
longer than the here and now!
Job was in great pain. The sexually confused also
experience great emotional pain as the world’s view of sex is pressed in on
them from every side. and they often find themselves asking the same question
of God that we find in Rom 9:20, "Why
have you made me like this?"
Jesus’ discussion with the religious leaders of His
day concerning divorce is helpful here. We read about it in Mt 19:9-12, “And I say to you, whoever
divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits
adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery." 10 His disciples said to Him, "If such is
the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry." 11 But He
said to them, "All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it
has been given: 12 "For there are eunuchs who were born thus from their
mother's womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there
are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake.
He who is able to accept it, let him accept it."
First of all, what is a eunuch? A eunuch is someone
who has sex removed from their radar screen.
Some are born that way and will not have the desire for heterosexual sex
in accordance with God’s will. (It is reserved for man and wife in marriage)
Others are eunuchs made by men. (These eunuchs were
physically fixed and placed in charge of the king’s harem, where they could not
tinker with the king’s goods.) But the
context here is a eunuch is also man made through the act of
unscriptural divorce.
Still others, like the Apostle Paul) decide to remain unmarried so they can devote
themselves to kingdom work without the responsibilities of a wife and children.
These three possibilities are available to all, the
key for each of us is to embrace our role, and thereby give glory to God. You
may struggle with being attracted to the same sex, or you may struggle with
your God-given gender. The struggle is real, but you don’t have to act on it.
You can embrace your role of eunuch.
Jesus, makes it clear that this teaching is difficult:
(Not all can accept it) but it’s truth whether we accept it or not. And if you
struggle in these areas, don’t curse God, rather invite Him in to your struggle
and He will help you through it in accordance with His good and perfect
will.
