Joh 5:45 "Do not
think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses
you--Moses, in whom you trust. 46 "For if you believed Moses, you would
believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47 "But if you do not believe his
writings, how will you believe My words?"
We have spent the last
couple of weeks in the courtroom of God. I don’t know if you noticed this or
not, but since verse 19 of this chapter we have heard words like, “life and
death,” “judge,” “judgement,” “granted life,” “execute judgement,” “witness,” “testimony,”
and today, we hear the word, “accuse.”
This is an important
part of Scripture in that it should impress upon all who read or hear it, that one
day, there will be a judgement. There will be time spent in a holy courtroom!
In this scenario, a
solid case is made for the deity of Christ, and a plan is put forth by which
all men can escape the judgement! A plan that guarantees acquittal! “He who
hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life and shall
not come into judgement.” (Jn 5:24)
In verses 45 through 47,
Jesus assures us that this courtroom scene just depicted in nothing new. The
plan of salvation has been present in the writings of Moses all along.
Sometimes, even today, we have a tendency to overlook the gospel according to
the Old Testament. How foolish in light of what Jesus says here!
If you do not believe
Moses writings, how will you believe My words?” And there are plenty of other places where Jesus
emphasizes the importance of understanding what the law and the Prophets say
about Him! In the story of the rich man and Lazarus, (Luke 16:19-31) The rich
man begs Abraham to send Lazarus back from the dead to his father’s house that
his five brothers would not suffer his fate in hell, and Abraham replied, “They
have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them.”
After His resurrection,
Jesus walked with some disciples on the road to Emmaus and beginning with Moses
and the prophets, He expounded to them all the Scriptures, the things
concerning Himself. (Luke 24:27)
If the New Testament
were never written, we would have enough evidence to believe in Christ and pass
from death to life. It has been said that the Old Testament is the foundation,
the New Testament is the superstructure. A Superstructure is impossible without
a sure foundation! Augustine summed up the writing this way: “The new is in the
old contained, the old is in the new explained.”
Praise God for His
written word, old and new! Believe it all! Hear the words of Christ! Believe in
the One who sent Him and pass from death to life!
