# 421 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 6:43,44 And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men.
Bread is a gift from God and it is not to be wasted. In Johns account of this miracle we read the command of Jesus given to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” ( Jn 6:12) By the way, the entire sixth chapter of John is devoted to the theme of bread. If you want to take the time to count, you will find the word “bread” mentioned 17 times. It begins with bread in the physical sense as necessary to strengthen and sustain physical life in the feeding of the 5,000, and moves to bread in the spiritual sense as embodied in the Son of man, (Jesus) who describes Himself as the bread of life that is necessary to strengthen and sustain spiritual life.
The Bread of Life is not to be wasted. The Roman Catholics provide a beautiful picture of this as they take extreme measures to gather any crumbs that may fall to the ground during the Lord's Supper. Now you may or not agree with their theology concerning the Lord's presence at the table, but the point being made is this.....nothing of Jesus is to be wasted. He is the Bread of Life sent from God, and so we receive Him with thanksgiving, and receive the Word that He embodies with the same attitude. Nothing is wasted. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable. (2 Tim 3:16)
