# 92 I and the Father Are One

Joh 5:19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 "For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21 "For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.

The Jews are looking for excuses to have Jesus put to death because they think He has broken the Law of the Sabbath and on top of that has committed blasphemy with His claim to be One with the Father. The rest of this chapter is dedicated to Jesus’ response to their concerns.

Here, He points out the inseparability of He and the Father, making a strong case for His position in the Trinity. He is so much a part of the Father that He can do nothing of Himself. He can only do what He sees the Father do. Not only does He do what the Father does, but He does it in like manner.

Jesus is the mirror image of the Father without the mirror! I have seen slapstick comedy routines where actors try to duplicate each other as if they were facing a mirror. They are very skillful at it but eventually one or the other will zig instead of zag and they mess it up. Not so with Jesus. Col 1:15 tells us: “He is the image of the invisible God,”

Jesus did everything the way He saw the Father do it. An impossible task unless the two are really One.

Then Jesus goes on to describe the depth of His Oneness with the Father. “The Father loves the Son,”  The word “loves” here is “phileo” and it means having common interests with one another. The Father and Son hold all things in common!

I wonder if many realize that this demonstration of Oneness is to be reflected by the Church in our care for one another. Remember the beginnings of the church in  Ac 4:32 we read, “Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common.”

How are we doing in that these days? How are we reflecting the Oneness of the Father and the Son?

God hid nothing from the Son. He never pulled an Ananias and Sapphira trick on Him! Remember that dynamic duo? Ac 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession.  2 And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles' feet.

Their hypocritical act cost them their lives. This demonstration of unity in the church is important stuff because it reflects on the character of God and His relationship with His Son!

Even the miracles of Jesus were only done as God directed the Son and Jesus knew that God would direct Him to do more and even greater miracles! The Jews will marvel at Jesus raising the dead. Just wait until Lazarus comes forth! Only God could do such a thing!

Therefore Jesus is God! He and the Father are One! Jesus not only restores life, but He gives life. He is God! He is over all creation! (Col 1:15) Believe the testimony of His works and bow your knee to Jesus as Lord!
