Joh 4:46 So Jesus came
again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a
certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus
had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come
down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
48 Then Jesus said to him, "Unless you
people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe."
A nobleman with a son near
death, travels 10 miles because he hears Jesus, the miracle worker, is in Cana.
He goes to Jesus and simply asks if He would return with him to his son and
heal him.
It appears that Jesus
responds rather brusquely to the nobleman’s plea, but I wonder if He wasn’t
just stating a fact. Signs and wonders go a long way in convincing us of the
deity of Christ. This simple fact is the backbone of the Gospel of John! Let me
explain.
Jesus would go on to
heal the nobleman’s son and John included it as one of the seven miracles in
his gospel. Miracles that were included so that you and I, and all who will
read this Gospel would believe that Jesus is the Christ! Joh 20:30,31 says, “And
truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are
not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that
Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in
His name.
We are no different than
that nobleman or others in Galilee. We want concrete evidence just as Thomas
did when he placed his hands in Jesus’ wounds. We want miracles! We want
healings! We want answered prayers! We want Jesus to prove He is real! Show us
that You are supernatural! Demonstrate Your deity in a tangible way, and many
times He does.
He did then as it says
in Joh 21:25, “And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if
they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not
contain the books that would be written. Amen.”
And He does now! How
many books do you suppose Jesus could fill today with all the miracles and
answered prayers He has brought forth since the days of John? He still answers
the prayers of the nobleman and the common man, the believer and the unbeliever
because He knows that unless the Galileans and Thomas’s of this world see signs
and wonders, they will by no means believe!
Jesus used signs and
wonders to convince people of His deity and the Apostles used them as well as
they went into the world with the gospel message! Ac 14:3 reminds us, “Therefore
they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing
witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by
their hands”
I’m afraid most people
are afraid of signs and wonders. They have a tendency to mistrust anything
supernatural. Others over-emphasize miracles and imply a lack of faith in those
who don’t emphasize them. Let’s find some middle ground here!
My Bible makes room for
both as Jesus spoke to the doubtful Thomas and said, “Thomas, because you
have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet
have believed." (John 20:29)
The end result is
believers and that’s what matter most to God!
