Joh 4:5 So He came to a
city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave
to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied
from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 A woman
of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink."
8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman
of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from
me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said to her, "If
you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you
would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."
The Samaritan woman is
puzzled by this Jew who asks her for a drink of water. Jews have no dealings
with Samaritans. But Jesus doesn’t get bogged down in a discussion of the
differences between the Jews and the Samaritans. (Seems like we could learn from that in today’s
world)
He has something to
offer the woman far greater than a debate. She has already sensed something
different about this man. There is an air of freedom about Him. (One aspect of
the fragrance of Christ that we would do well to grasp) He is so secure in who
He is that He can speak directly to a woman of ill repute, a Samaritan at that,
and ask her for a drink of water!
Jesus avoids a direct
answer to her question, but gives her the answer that will give her the same
kind of freedom if she is willing to receive it. “Ma’m if you knew who you were
talking to, and if you knew the gift of God, (new life in the Spirit) you would
have immediately asked for that gift, and He would have given it to you!”
Isn’t that the truth!
As I look back on my own
life, I get glimpses of how often Jesus was speaking to me and I didn’t realize
it. If I would’ve known, really known, that it was the Son of God, that He was
the One sent to die for my sins and the sins of the world, that He is the One
now seated at the right hand of God the Father, I would’ve fallen on my knees
and cried, “Lord, have mercy om me, a sinner!”
If I would’ve known the
gift of God given through Jesus, I would’ve asked immediately, “ O Lord give me
that gift, for it is worth far more than this life could ever offer! Never mind
my false ideas about religion and salvation. Never mind my false sense of
security in my own perceived goodness. Never mind the stale and stagnant waters
of tradition and legalism. (The well of the Law of Jacob’s well) Lord, Christ,
have mercy on me and give me the living water of Your grace!”
Friend, do you really
know who has been talking to you through the Gospel? He speaks to you through
His Word and your circumstances just as He did to the Samaritan woman. Ask God
to remove the veil from your heart that you might know who it is that is
speaking to you! You are engaged in a conversation with the One sent by the
Father. The One who knows everything you have ever done, yet loves you so much
that He still died for you. Knowing this, you will believe, and believing you
will ask for the gift of God, and He will give you Living Water!
