The Institution That God Loves

Good day, I’m Duane Matz and this is Today’s Living Word.

Anyone who is considering marriage, for starters, ought to take the time to read and meditate on Mal 2:11-16.

There is so much to consider in these passages before you “take the plunge.” Let’s start by looking at verse 11.

Mal 2:11 Judah has dealt treacherously, And an abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem, For Judah has profaned The LORD'S holy institution which He loves: He has married the daughter of a foreign god.

Judah….God’s people….believers, have committed an abomination (something God views as disgusting) They have profaned (made common) the Lord’s holy institution that HE loves.  (marriage)  How did they do that? For starters, they have married an unbeliever.

God loves what He instituted in holy matrimony! It was His idea from the get go! Ge 2:24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Since He instituted it, He knows best of what He wants it to look like, and marrying a fellow believer ought to be the starting point.

Having said that, I know this is not always easy. You do not have access to your potential spouse’s heart. God does! So pray! Pray and do the best you can in this area of discernment. It’s important, or God would not have included it in His Word.

And if it turns out that your spouse is an unbeliever. Make the best of the situation. It is not grounds for divorce. The Apostle Paul addressed this situation in 1Co 7:12-14, “

“ But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her. 13 And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.
