# 60 The Original Bad Bad Leroy Brown

The Book of Genesis Day 60 Ge 4:23 Then Lamech said to his wives: "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me. 24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold." 25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, "For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed." 26 And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD. This Lamech dude is bad with a capital “B.” He comes home to his wives after killing a young man and brags about it! It is important to note that the tone of his announcement is that of a boast. Verses 23 and 24 are actually a poem, an ode, if you will, a self-penned tribute to the type of man that Lamech was. He is the original “Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown.” If Cain was bad, Lamech was ten times worse! So here we are, just four generations removed from Cain, and man could care less about God and His Word. Polygamy and murder have become things to brag about instead of be broken over. This portion of Scripture sets the stage for what the Adamic world is coming to. A violent, law breaking, God –sneering, rather than a God-fearing culture. But wait! It’s not all hopeless! Adam and Eve give birth to another son, whose name is Seth. His name means, “substituted.” As Eve put it, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel.” We might note here that out of the seed of Abel will come the ultimate substitute…..Jesus Christ, who died for us sinners as a substitute on the cross! Seth and his wife produce a child named Enosh and then something very significant happens in the world. Men began to call on the name of the Lord! Men began to pray! This statement carries with it the idea of corporate worship or prayer. What a difference between the lineage of Cain and the lineage of Seth. While Lamech is bragging about his life without God, Enosh and the other seeds of Seth seek communion with Him. While Lamech and his ilk seek to rely on their own strength, Enosh and others seek to humbly come before the Lord and call on Him to intercede on their behalf. The line has been more clearly drawn in the sand. These are the two types of people you will find in the world. There are no other classifications. Jesus said it best in Mt 12:30, He who is not with Me is against Me.” That’s all we really need to know. The lineage of Cain begets violence and death, while the lineage of Seth brings forth life. What lineage do you want to be part of? Reflect: If you could write an Ode about yourself, what would you brag about? (Don’t be overly humble, just name something you think you are good at!) Where do you think you got your talent(s) from? Is there a connection between your God-given abilities and how you might use them in serving God? Pray: Father, thank You for the gifts You have given me. Help me to seek ways to use them to bring glory to You!
