When Will We Believe That Children Are A Blessing
# 34 – Today's Du-votional comes from 1Sa 2:20 And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, "The LORD give you descendants from this woman for the loan that was given to the LORD." Then they would go to their own home.
21 And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the child Samuel grew before the LORD. (1 Sam 2:20,21)
Year after year Elkanah and Hannah would bring their offerings and a new coat for Samuel, and year after year Eli would pronounce this blessing on them. Listen carefully to the blessing.
“The Lord give you descendants,” in other words the Lord grant you children! Children are a blessing from the Lord. Hannah and Elkanah knew this and believed it! ….........................Would that we would believe it as well.
We don't find Hannah and Elkanah saying to Eli, “Alright, we already have two other kids, so stop with the blessing already.” No! They welcomed these children for what they were, gifts and blessings from the Lord.
Ps 127:3 says, Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Do we really believe this or do we look upon it as something for the unsophisticated people of the Old Testament?
The word heritage means “something inherited”. In other words children are an inheritance from God. They are bequeathed to us. Imagine being present at the reading of a will and finding out you are going to inherit a million dollars. Would you stop the reading and say, “no thanks, I already have 300 dollars.” How silly.
Or imagine rejecting any other reward from God. “No thanks God, I'm good” Well maybe you think you are, but letting God choose the size of your reward would be immeasurably better. We would do well to trust God rather than man for the size of our families.
