# 29 The Wedding At Cana
Joh 2:1 On the third day
there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2
Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they
ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine."
4 Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My
hour has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Whatever
He says to you, do it." 6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone,
according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or
thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with
water." And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them,
"Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast." And they
took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made
wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the
water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom.
10 And he said to him, "Every man at the
beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the
inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!" 11 This beginning of
signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples
believed in Him.
This is the first of
what appears to be carefully chosen miracles included in the Gospel of John.
The seven miracles that John included all have a mission. They were designed to
stir up saving faith in Jesus as the Son of the Living God….the Messiah! Joh 20:30,31 reminds us: “And truly Jesus
did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in
this book;
31 but these are written that you may believe
that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life
in His name.”
Most of us have been to
a wedding reception! They’ve been around a long time. To be sure, there are
cultural differences in how we celebrate the wedding, I mean they likely weren’t
doing the chicken dance in Cana, but you can be sure there was dancing and
celebrating! In fact, the celebrations could go on for a week! Maybe that’s why they ran out of wine!
It is fitting that Jesus
would perform His first miracle at a wedding feast, for the day is coming when
believers will gather at the throne and celebrate the final wedding feast!
And I heard, as it were,
the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of
mighty thunderings, saying, "Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!
7 "Let us be glad and rejoice and give
Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself
ready."
8 And to her it was granted to be arrayed in
fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the
saints.
9 Then he said to me, "Write: 'Blessed
are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!'" And he said
to me, "These are the true sayings of God." (Rev 19:6-9)
Blessed are those in
attendance at this Great Feast! The Lord has been busy from day one writing out
invitations! It is His heartfelt desire that all attend, desiring that all come
to repentance and faith! “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as
some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any
should perish but that all should come to repentance”. (2 Pet 3:9)
Believe me, He is not
concerned about the size of the hall, or the amount of refreshments and meals
to have available. Did He not feed five thousand with just a little fish and
bread? Did HE not turn water into wine? No need to hold back on the invitations
to this feast, being thrown by the One who owns the cattle on a thousand hills!
So HE sends His servants
out to invite all to the wedding. Have you responded to this invitation? Don’t
delay! RSVP today! “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after
this the judgment,” (Heb 9:27)
Don’t leave this earth
with that invitation buried under all your other mail. (the cares and concerns
of this world) Respond to it today! God is inviting you to His final wedding
feast. Humbly acknowledge your sins and your need for forgiveness. Receive the
Groom, Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
