Joh 1:18 No one has seen
God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He
has declared Him.
You may have heard it
said that Jesus was a “great teacher.” He was! He is the greatest teacher ever!
The problem with that statement is it often comes with the assertion that He is
not God! That He was JUST a great teacher!
John dispels that nonsense
with the reminder that no one born of flesh has ever seen God and lived to tell
about it. Only Someone who shares the absolute pure holiness of the Father can
see the face of the Father. That someone is Jesus! He is both man and God!
He is the ONLY begotten
Son who is in the bosom of the Father. In other words, Jesus is the heart of
the Father, He is His very essence! Do you want to know God? Then get to know
Jesus! "I and My Father are one." (Jn 10:30)
The incarnation of Jesus,
(the taking on of human flesh through the virgin birth) was and is meant to be
an unfolding or declaration of the essence of the Father.
While Jesus walked this
earth, He “declared” God the Father! The word “declared in the Greek means to “unfold
through teaching.” It’s what He did for the three years He walked with His
disciples, (His students if you will) He sought to unfold the essence of the
Father to His students!
Joh 14:8,9 says, “Philip
said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us."
9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been
with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has
seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
This essence of the Father,
that the disciples experienced through Jesus
was “grace and truth” (v14) and of course love. (Joh 3:16 "For
God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.)
This is what Jesus “declared”
to His disciples and what His disciples are to declare to others.
