# 166 When God Overthrows

The Book of Genesis

Day 166

Ge 19:24 Then the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens.  25 So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.

The Lord caused it to rain fire and brimstone from the heavens. This fire and brimstone destroyed everything! God “overthrew” those cities.  The word “overthrew” is very interesting, and serves as a reminder to us of how God carries out perfect justice.  The word means “to overturn or pervert.”  The idea being that Sodom and Gomorrah were turned into something they were not meant to be…..cinders!  So you see, they were perverted! These cities and their perverted behaviors,  were  themselves justly perverted by God.

Remember the sins of these cities! Learn from them!  According to Jude 1:7, they included sexual immorality and  going after strange flesh . (read that homosexuality)  In Ezek 16:49 the sins of pride, idleness, and refusal to help the poor even though they had an  abundance of food, were listed.  These are all “perverted” behaviors, in that God did not create us to live like that!

This “overturning,” or annihilation by God is warned of in several places in Scripture. In 2 Ki 21:13, God warned Jerusalem that He would “turn them upside down,”  'And I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line of Samaria and the plummet of the house of Ahab; I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down.

He warned the Gentiles that He would “overthrow” them as well in Hag 2:22, “I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; I will destroy the strength of the Gentile kingdoms. I will overthrow the chariots And those who ride in them; The horses and their riders shall come down,”

The citizens of Ninevah knew what it meant to be “overthrown and when Jonah warned them about it….they repented!  Jon 3:4 says, “ And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day's walk. Then he cried out and said, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!"

There’s only two choices folks!  In the end, Prov 12:7 tells us: “The wicked are overthrown and are no more, But the house of the righteous will stand.”

We were not meant to live apart from God, that is a perversion! A perversion that can be remedied by faith in Jesus Christ!

Pray: Father thank You for the gift of life offered to us by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Let us be like the citizens of Ninevah and take these warnings to heart!
