Good day! I’m Duane Matz and this is Today’s Living Word:
Isa 9:5 For every warrior's sandal from
the noisy battle, And garments rolled in blood, Will be used for burning and
fuel of fire. 6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the
government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful,
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase
of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and
over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From
that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform
this.
We sing the song “I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day”
often, well it comes to us from these inspired words penned by Isaiah. The
carol came from a poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He wrote it
during the civil war after his son had been critically wounded in battle. I
thought it would be fitting in light of today’s reading from Isaiah:
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their
old, familiar carols play,
And
wild and sweet
The
words repeat
Of
peace on earth, good-will to men!
And thought how, as the day had come,
The
belfries of all Christendom
Had
rolled along
The
unbroken song
Of
peace on earth, good-will to men!
Till ringing, singing on its way,
The
world revolved from night to day,
A
voice, a chime,
A
chant sublime
Of
peace on earth, good-will to men!
Then from each black, accursed mouth
The
cannon thundered in the South,
And
with the sound
The
carols drowned
Of
peace on earth, good-will to men!
It was as if an earthquake rent
The
hearth-stones of a continent,
And
made forlorn
The
households born
Of
peace on earth, good-will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
"There
is no peace on earth," I said;
"For
hate is strong,
And
mocks the song
Of
peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God
is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The
Wrong shall fail,
The
Right prevail,
With
peace on earth, good-will to men."
And that is the message from Isaiah 9:5-7
I’m Duane Matz and that’s Today’s Living Word.
