The
prophet Isaiah prophesied during the reign of 4 kings in Judah and we’ve been
looking at the state of things during these times to get an idea of the moral
condition of Judah. The first two kings, (Uzziah and Jotham) were good kings
who sought to do what was right in the sight of the Lord.
Unfortunately,
the people had other ideas and lived contrary to the Word of God. Then along
came King Ahaz. He was a disaster, he was just what the “corrupt” people were
asking for, and as it is so many times, God judged the people by giving them
what they wanted.
Remember
when the people complained about a lack of meat in the wilderness and God gave
them birds. So many birds that they choked on them! Let me refresh your memory
as we look at God’s response to their complaint: Nu 11:19 'You shall eat,
not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days, 20 'but for a whole month, until it comes out
of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have despised the
LORD who is among you, and have wept before Him, saying, "Why did we ever
come up out of Egypt?"'"
Then
there’s the judgement of God we find in Ro 1:20-25, “For since the creation
of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the
things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are
without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as
God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish
hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed
the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--and
birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God also gave
them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies
among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped
and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
Did
you catch that part in verse 24? “God gave them up!” He was saying this is what
eventually happens when you refuse to glorify God and you decide to worship the
creature rather than the Creator.
And
then He spells it out for us in the remaining verses of that chapter: Ro
1:26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women
exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men,
leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men
with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty
of their error which was due. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in
their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which
are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality,
wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit,
evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent,
proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31
undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing
the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are
deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice
them.
This
is what has been happening in our nation for years. We lament the moral
decadence in our country, but the truth is God is just giving us what we want. He
is giving us the results of our self-creature-worship, rather than God-worship.
