The Book of Genesis
Day 333
Gen
36:15,24,31,35,39, 43 These were the chiefs of the sons of Esau.
24 These were the
sons of Zibeon: both Ajah and Anah. This was the Anah who found the water in
the wilderness as he pastured the donkeys of his father Zibeon.
31 Now these were
the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the
children of Israel:
35 And when Husham
died, Hadad the son of Bedad, who attacked Midian in the field of Moab, reigned
in his place. And the name of his city was Avith.
39 And when
Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor died, Hadar reigned in his place; and the name of
his city was Pau. His wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the
daughter of Mezahab.
43 Esau was the father of the Edomites.
This entire chapter deals with the genealogy
of Esau and I have taken the liberty to select some of the verses that have
little side notes that go beyond who begat who.
Esau was the
father of the Edomites and the Edomites were not the “children of promise.” That
honor was bestowed upon Jacob and his descendants. For illustration purposes,
let’s call the Edomites the world, and the Israelites the church. In so doing
we pick up a few inklings of the concept of two kingdoms.
God governs the
spiritual side of man through the church, and the affairs of the world through
secular government. And so as we read of the descendants of Esau we see terms
like “chiefs” and “kings” as opposed to “patriarchs,” God uses these “secular” chiefs and kings to
rule civil governments to carry out His will.
This concept is explained in greater detail in Rom 13!
Ro 13:1 says, “Let
every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority
except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”
I say these things,
just to remind us all that God is very much involved in His church and in the
world. No wonder we are encouraged to pray for “those in authority!” 1Ti 2:1
Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and
giving of thanks be made for all men, 2
for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable
life in all godliness and reverence.
History is His
Story and as Jesus said in Mt 5:45b, “for He makes His sun rise on the evil and
on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”
And so the world
goes on, with their chiefs and kings, and these side notes are mentioned in the
line of Esau, because their stories matter to God! A man finds water while
tending his donkeys, (v24) Hadad attacks Midian in the field of Moab (v35) and
even the wife of Hadar gets a mention.
People matter to
God! What seems like insignificant details get mentioned in the eternal Word of
God, He is not just interested in His church, but He has His eyes on all
mankind, (why I’m told that His eye is even on the sparrow!) and this is a good
time to remind each and every one of us, who by the grace of God, find
ourselves as citizens in His kingdom, that behind every set of eyes is a soul that
matters to God! ……even Anah the donkey keeper!
