# 326 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 4:10-11 “But when He was alone, those around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable. And He said to them, "To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables, ”
Jesus spoke to this crowd from a boat. We are told that He taught them “many things by parables,” that's what the crowd got....parables. Heavenly truths cloaked in earthly stories. Like the dreaded “story problems” in math class, these parables needed to be carefully studied and a teacher is needed to help guide the student to the correct answer. And to those outside the kingdom (without faith), these truths will remain cloaked because they lack the indwelling Teacher....the Holy Spirit..
For “the natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Cor 2:14)
Look what happened here. Just about everyone left! It's like the students that struggle with the story problem in math. They throw up their hands and say, “I don't get it.” They give up on it and walk out when the bell rings.
On the other hand, the ones who really care will hang around after class and seek out the teacher for an explanation of the material.
That's what happened here. Most of the crowd went home and Jesus was left alone with the twelve “AND THOSE AROUND HIM.” Most of the people showed no desire to wrestle with the words of Jesus, but those who chose to hang around with the master Teacher, were blessed with an explanation.
Hang around Jesus. Treat His Word like a gold mine. Tell Him in prayer that you really want to get it, ask Him for His spiritual discernment. He will be more than happy to teach you these things. Joh 14:26 says, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

Timeless Repetitive Truths
# 325 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 4:5-9 "Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. "But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. "And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no crop. "But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred." And He said to them, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!"

First Lesson From the Parable of the Sower
# 324 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 4:3-4 "Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 "And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it.
Let's get the picture. In this day and age of modern machinery and mega farms, it's hard to identify with the farming methods of Jesus' day. The field having been prepared by the crude cultivating tools, would likely not look the same as a typical field in a Midwest planting season.
Our modern plows dig deep and turn the soil over where it is then further pulverized by other farm machinery and then the seeds are planted by machinery at a precise depth. Good luck getting our seeds today birds!
Not so though in the typical farm of Jesus' day. The farmer would be working a smaller plot of land, with a bag of seed thrown over his shoulder, and as careful as he might be, some of it would miss his prepared soil and land on the hard paths that served as boundary markers between fields.
One can almost picture the birds following the sower and feasting on the seed. We don't read of the sower chasing after the birds to protect his seed. He has plenty, the food for the birds is factored in as part of his overhead. In this parable, we know that this seed represents the Word of God, and a quick lesson for us here is that the Bible, the Word of God, like that bag of seed, is more than sufficient, for a crop of righteousness.
Did you get that? The Bible, the Word of God, is more than sufficient!

Behold! A New Testament Selah
# 323 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 4:1-3 “And again He began to teach by the sea. And a great multitude was gathered to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole multitude was on the land facing the sea. Then He taught them many things by parables, and said to them in His teaching: "Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow.”
Parables. Earthly stories with heavenly meanings. Real life events that teach spiritual realities. Jesus introduces His parable with a command to those within earshot to “listen.” The idea being to pay close attention to what is about to be said because it is something important to understand.
“Behold, a sower went out to sow.”
I love that word, “behold!” It is used often in Scripture. It means to lock into something. Pause, let the reality of what is about to be said sink in!
In the Psalms, you will often find the word "Selah." It is a direction given to the reader to pause and consider what has been said. Take it in as reality. This is what Jesus wants us to do with this parable of the sower.
Another great example of the use of this word is found in Jn 1:29, “Behold, the Baptist said, “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” And those who paused and took in what the Baptist was saying, had to make a decision didn't they? Some heard and followed Jesus immediately, (Jn 1:37) others probably hemmed and hawed and still others let John's words go in one ear and out the other. They didn't stop and behold.
Have you beheld John's words? Have you paused and taken in the reality of what he said? Jesus is the one who takes away your sin. What will you do with that reality? Ignore it? Hem and Haw? Or will you follow Him?

Doing the Will of the Father
# 322 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:31-35, “ Then His brothers and His mother came, and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him. And a multitude was sitting around Him; and they said to Him, "Look, Your mother and Your brothers are outside seeking You." But He answered them, saying, "Who is My mother, or My brothers?" And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, "Here are My mother and My brothers! "For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother."
If you recall from v21 of this chapter, Jesus' family members were very concerned about His mental well-being and now they send word to Him through the crowd that they would like to talk to Him. Rather than going to talk to them He uses the opportunity to teach a great spiritual truth.
We could even rephrase His question to the crowd this way: “Who is closest to Me? Who is closer than even blood relatives? The answer is, anyone who does the will of the Father.
Now, be careful here, lest you think that “doing” the will of the Father is tied to a list of do this and don't do that. That would be salvation by works. Do you really believe that this is the spiritual lesson that Jesus is trying to get across here? What does He mean when He says, “do the will of the Father?”
The will of the Father in the context of becoming closer to God than blood relatives is connected to repentance.
The Twentieth Century New Testament puts it this way in 2Pe 3:9, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise, as some count slowness; but he is forbearing with you, as it is not his will that any of you should perish, but that all should be brought to repentance.”
What is His will? That all should be brought to repentance! Do you want to become close to Jesus and part of His heavenly family? Then allow Him to bring you to repentance! Have godly sorrow over your sins and then believe the Gospel! Trust in the blood of Jesus, to cleanse you from all of your sins.
This is the will of the Father. This is how you become close to the Father. And out of this closeness and love for the Father, the desire to live according to His Word will follow.

Dangerous Territory
# 321 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:28-30 In solemn truth I tell you that the sons of men shall be forgiven all their sins and all the blasphemies they may utter, but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit is never forgiven. Nay, he is in the grasp of an eternal sin." Because they kept saying, "He has an unclean spirit."
Again, whenever this passage is discussed, I believe it is vital to assure those who have doubts about whether they may have committed this sin to realize that if they are concerned about committing it, they haven't.
Nonetheless, just by listening to the tone of Jesus' words, one can see that this is a serious matter. Jesus solemnly warns these religious leaders that because they have intimated that the Holy Spirit is a demon, they have placed themselves in very dangerous territory.
It is very close to the territory now occupied by the devil and his demons. They placed themselves there when they revolted against God. And what is revolt against God if not the attitude that “We do not need You God, we will rule our lives!” God judged them for their revolt and His judgment was simply this, the devil and his demons will never be able to come to repentance. Have you ever thought about that?
The Bible tells us that the demons believe in God and tremble. The demons BELIEVE in God! They even tremble before Him, yet the one thing they are missing is godly sorrow over their sin, or repentance. They are never sorry for any of the mayhem they engage in.
They can't be, because God has permanently hardened them to repentance, and they are doomed. How fitting a punishment for those who would demonize the Holy Spirit......those guilty of this sin will spend eternity in torment with demons.
Jesus, (who could see the hearts of these Pharisees) was warning them that they were dangerously close to this point. Friend don't play games with repentance. It's not something you can manufacture, it is a gift from God.
It comes to us through the preaching of the Law. When the law strikes our heart and we are convinced of our sin, convinced that we have sinned against God, the gift has arrived. Open it and agree with God that you have sinned against Him and then receive His free offer of forgiveness. 2Co 6:1, 2 says, “We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain.
2 For He says: "In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you." Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”
Be quick to receive God's gift of repentance. Grab it while it is today, you don't know if it will ever be offered to you again.

The Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit

I know of very few people who have read this verse and haven't wondered, “Have I committed the unforgivable sin?” Relax. Without oversimplifying the matter, if you are concerned about committing it, you haven't. But why is every other sin committed by man forgivable and not this one?
I like the way the Lutheran commentator Lenski puts it. He says, “The Spirit alone works repentance and when He is made a demon, His work ceases.”
Without the work of the Holy Spirit, we are cooked! Joh 6:63 says, "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
Repentance is a gift from God. You cannot conjure up godly sorrow over your sin. And without repentance, there can be no salvation. 2 Cor 7:10 says, “For godly grief produces repentance that leads to salvation.” Repentance is a very necessary step in the process of salvation, and to curse the agent of repentance, the Holy Spirit is to say to God, “I don't need Your gift of repentance, I can come up with my own.
God-granted repentance. So vital to salvation. It's why John preached it. It's why Jesus preached it. It's why the Apostles preached it. It's why we need to get back to preaching it today.
But how do you preach repentance? Well, the first step is to preach the harshness of the Law....as Nathan did when he confronted David with his sins. “You are the man!”
Where is this preaching of the Law in the pulpits of our land today? I'm afraid we have exchanged it for a feel good gospel, that in effect, as Luther has put it.....ultimately demonizes the Holy Spirit. And we wonder why revival tarries.

The Captives of the Mighty Shall Be Rescued
# 319 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:27 "No one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.”
One of the benefits of prophecy is that it can kindle and strengthen faith. I hope today that this word will strengthen and kindle faith in you. This binding of the strong man and plundering His goods spoken of in this portion of Mark, was prophesied by Isaiah many years before Jesus arrived on the scene.
Listen to the Word of the Lord from Is 49:25,26 - “For thus says the Lord, “Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken and the prey of the tyrant be rescued, for I will contend with those who contend with you and I will save your children. I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine. Then all flesh shall know that I am the Lord your Savior, and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”
The Lord was telling us to watch for this time in history, because it would serve as proof positive to all people that the Messiah, the Lord, the Savior, the Redeemer, the Mighty One had arrived on the scene. The Messiah has come, and the proof is found in the sheer number of those whom He delivered from demonic possession. It's just as the Lord said it would be in Is 49:25,26.

Binding the Strong Man
# 318 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:27 "No one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.”
The strong man here is the devil, his house is the world. Three times in the gospel of John, Jesus referred to the devil as the “prince of this world,” Before Jesus arrived on the scene the prince of the world pretty much had his way. Have you ever considered the sheer number of people that were set free from demonic possession after Jesus began His ministry?
This world was a very dark place when Jesus arrived. His first confrontation with the strong man took place after His baptism when the Spirit drove Him out into the wilderness for the big showdown.
The devil threw every temptation known to man at Jesus during those 40 days, but He did not give in, He did not sin. He proved that even as the Man God He was more powerful than the devil, and it was after His return from the wilderness that He began to untie the strong man's victims and set them free.
His persistent and complete resistance to the devil's temptations, kept Him sinless, and it is in steadfast resistance, that the upper hand is gained. Jas 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
If we are to experience victory over the strongman we too must employ the tactic of steadfast resistance, but don't forget the first part of this verse. “Submit to God! That is the real key.
Jesus was perfectly submitted to the Father. He and the Father are One, and therefore He was without sin. When we submit to God, we rely on His sinlessness to gain the upper hand over the powers of darkness. It's not in our sin stained names that we gain the victory, but in the precious, holy name of Jesus.
The key to victory in spiritual battle is to remain in Jesus. He's the champ, not you. It is in remaining in Him that the tactic of resistance is fully employed, and the strong mans hands are tied..

Jesus continues to answer the charge that He casts out demons by the power of Satan. He speaks in still another parable. You wouldn't think of entering Rambo's house and helping yourself to his big screen TV, computer equipment, silver, etc. without first rendering him powerless to stop you.
Well, in this parable, the strong man is Satan. And the first lesson we can learn from this parable is that the enemy is strong. Never underestimate his power and strength.
Peter knew his strength well and he warns us in 1 Pet 5:8 that the “devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” In real life, you wouldn't want to deal with a hungry roaring lion. Why would you want to deal with him in your own strength in your spiritual life?
James 4:7 gives us the proper way to deal with this strong enemy. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
Why? Because the Lion of Judah is more powerful than the devil. He is the only one who can bind the strong man and plunder his goods. Don't mess with the devil, seek refuge in Christ and let Him battle for you.

Unity, But Never At the Expense of Truth
# 316 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:23-26 So He called them to Himself and said to them in parables: "How can Satan cast out Satan? "If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. "And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. "And if Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he cannot stand, but has an end.”
The scribes and Pharisees have started rumors that Jesus was casting out demons by the power of Satan. He addresses their ridiculous charge with a question. How can Satan cast out Satan? How can anyone turn against themselves? Then He uses two parables, (earthly stories with heavenly implications) to make His point.
A kingdom engaged in a ceaseless Civil War will eventually cease to be a kingdom, and a family that engages in a ceaseless civil war will eventually cease to be a family. These are undeniable natural truths with implications for the universal church, the local congregation, and even for individual families.
Friends, we need to aim to keep it together! Fight for peace and unity. Ro 12:18 says, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.
And in 2 Cor 13:11 we read, ”Finally brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace and the God of love and peace will be with you.”
However, this peace must never be obtained at the sacrifice of truth, and that's the tricky part isn't it? We must learn to speak the truth to each other in love. Let me say this about speaking the truth in love. This does not mean that we add syruppy inflection to our voice when we speak, or that we seek to sugar coat the truth with cloutless words seeking to soften the blow.
Truth is truth. Speak it! That's what Jesus did. To speak it in love simply means that as we speak truth, we live our lives in love. And that is also what Jesus did.
These two things are difficult to argue with.....truth....and love.

The Rumor Mill
# 315 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:22,23 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, "He has Beelzebub," and, "By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons." So He called them to Himself and said to them in parables: "How can Satan cast out Satan?”
The rumor mill. Have you ever been victimized by rumors? Untrue statements passed along by others for the sole purpose of bringing you or someone else down? Take heart from this passage, for this is the most vicious rumor ever spread by anyone in the history of the world.
Any other rumor, no matter how slanderous it may seem to you, pales in comparison to this. Jesus handled this rumor.......... He can handle yours.
Note how He handled it. A rumor is like blowing the seeds off of a dandelion. It is impossible to gather them all back in again. Jesus didn't attempt to do that, rather He went to the source of the rumor. He called the rumor starters to Him for a personal meeting. Then He presented them with undeniable facts. Truth has a way of squelching rumors.
By the way, it is the rumor spreaders responsibility to chase down the dandelion seeds. When the seeds of untrue statements come your way, as they so often do around the modern day water cooler we call the internet, correct the erring person privately, and remind them of their responsibility to bring the slanderous seeds back in.
Leviticus 19:16-18 says, “Never gossip. Never endanger your neighbors life. I am the Lord. Never hate another Israelite. Be sure to correct your neighbor so that you will not be guilty of sinning along with him. Never get revenge. Never hold a grudge against any of your people. Instead, love your neighbor as you love yourself. I am the Lord.” (God's Word)

An Interesting Messianic Prophecy
# 314 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:19-21 And they went into a house. 20 Then the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. 21 But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, "He is out of His mind."
We know nothing about the life of Jesus from the age of twelve until the age of thirty. All we are told is that He “increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man. (Luke 2:52)
When Jesus began His anointed ministry at the age of 30 everything changed. And it changed so drastically, that unbelieving members of His family thought He was crazy. Perhaps you have felt this same kind of sting and rejection from those close to you as you have chosen to follow Christ.
It's interesting to note that this very incident was prophesied in Ho 9:7 “The days of visitation are come, the days of recompense are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the man that hath the spirit is mad, for the abundance of thine iniquity, and because the enmity is great.”
What was Hosea saying? The people would be so blinded by their sin and disbelief, that they would view the Messiah as a madman! That's exactly what happened to Jesus. May this fulfilled prophecy from the inerrant Word of God strengthen your faith today in the face of any and all adversity or doubt..

People Will Think You Are Crazy For Following Christ

Jesus comes down from the mountain with His newly appointed 12 Apostles and went to a home in Capernaum. The people were so hungry for a touch from Him that they crowded around Him and His disciples to the extent that they couldn't even get a bite to eat.
Well, the word got back to His family, including His mother, and this was the last straw for them. It was one thing to leave the carpentry business, and to wander around the countryside without the comforts of this world, but now it was becoming a health concern for the family. (Moms are always concerned when their children aren't eating right.)
His unbelieving family members thought that Jesus had “lost His mind.” They desired strongly to pull Him away from this demanding lifestyle to and restore what they considered His failing mental health.
As a new believer, perhaps you can identify with Jesus. Your priorities have changed and those close to you think you are nuts to redirect your life. You are in good company beloved. Stay the course.

What Motivated Judas
# 312 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.”
Let's talk a little more about Judas. One of the amazing things about Judas is that even after witnessing all the power of Jesus working miracles, even after hearing Him speak, even after being given the power to heal end exorcise demons himself, he never came to saving faith.
On the very night that he betrayed Jesus, he addressed Jesus as Rabbi and not Lord. “Is it I Rabbi?” (Mt 26:25) Jesus was a great teacher to him, but not Lord. What was it that blinded him so?
The answer is money. It was Judas who complained about the ointment poured on the feet of Jesus because it was money that could have been put into the treasury and given to the poor, but as the Holy Spirit informs us through John, “He said this not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief.” (Jn 12:6)
And listen to his question to the high priests in Mt 26:15, “What will you GIVE me if I deliver Him over to you.” Judas was motivated by money. He followed Jesus only for the temporal fringe benefits.
Jesus stated Judas' problem clearly in Lu 16:13 "No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."
Judas serves as a reminder to all of us for all time to check our own motivation. Is Jesus just a great teacher to you? Is He just a benefactor? Or is He Lord? If He is truly Lord, than we should be interested in one thing, serving Him for His glory!

Judas the Betrayer and Faith Strengthener
# 311 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.” Next on the list of appointed Apostles is Judas Iscariot. This Judas is almost always referred to as the betrayer. He is the one who “surrendered,” or “gave Jesus up” to the authorities. He was also the embezzling treasurer of this traveling band of disciples as noted by John in Jn 12:6, “having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put in it.”
A thief and a turncoat. Why would Jesus pick such a lout to be an Apostle? Actually the answer to that question is found in Jn 13:18,19, “I am not speaking of all of you: I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, “He who ate My bread has lifted his heel against Me. I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place, you may believe that I am He.”
Did you get that? Judas was chosen for one reason....that Scripture would be fulfilled, and fulfilled scripture strengthens faith in Jesus! “That you may believe that I am He.” The Apostles didn't get it here in the upper room, but they would understand it all later, and it would strengthen their faith. That's what fulfilled scripture, (prophecy) is designed to do.....strengthen our faith.
Dt 18:21, “And if you say in your heart, How may we know the Word that the Lord has not spoken? When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken.”
May this fulfilled prophecy concerning Judas, strengthen your faith in Jesus as the Messiah today.

Simon: Correctly Channeled Zealousy
# 310 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:18, “Simon the Cananite;”
Next on the list of appointed disciples is Simon the Cananite. Luke refers to Simon as the zealot. This nickname given to Simon indicates that he had at one time been a member of a political movement called the “zealots.”
The zealots were extreme in their desire to overthrow the Roman rule over the Jews. They left a trail of blood and violence wherever they went, and in the end, they came to nothing.
Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law made reference to them at a council meeting in Acts 5:37, “After him Judas the Galilean (a zealot) rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished and all who followed him were scattered.”
This census, by the way, was the one that caused Mary and Joseph to travel to Bethlehem for the birth of the Messiah.
Isn't it interesting that some revolted at the idea of a census and more taxation, (submission to government authorities) while Mary and Joseph submitted to the authorities. Perhaps Joseph and Mary they knew the truth behind Rom 13:1,2
“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.”
In the long run, it's clear which path worked out for the better for Mary and Joseph. And it's clear which path worked out better for Simon the zealot.
No longer taking the law into his own hands, Simon placed himself in the hands of the Savior, and he became an instrument used of God to take the Gospel to the nations.
Sometimes we Christians become overly zealous about our government, forgetting that God is not only in control of the Kingdom of heaven, but also the “kingdoms of earth.” It is a good exercise to read Romans 13:1-7 at times like this and to remember that, “The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.(Prov 21:1)
Believe it fellow citizens of heaven and keep the main thing, the main thing.

Thaddeus: The Other Judas Asks One Great Question
# 309 - Today we read from Mr 3:18, “Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.”
Next on the list of appointed disciples is Thaddeus. Matthew names this disciple as Lebbaeus whose surname (make that nickname) is Thaddaeus. (Mt 10:3) Luke calls him Judas the son of James. (Luke 6:16)
The only other time we read of him in Scripture is found in Jn 14:22, “Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord how is it that you will manifest yourself to us and not to the world?”
This is the night of the Last Supper and Jesus has been telling His disciples about His departure, and Judas' question is the kind of question that shows he was paying close attention to what Jesus was saying. Basically, he interrupts the Lord's discourse because he doesn't quite understand how Jesus will still be evident to them, when Jesus is gone.
First of all bless this man for not being afraid to ask a question when he doesn't understand something!
Then, listen to our Lord's response, because this is how Jesus makes Himself evident to us even today. Judas, “If anyone loves Me He will keep My word.....and We will come to him.”
Love Jesus. Sacrificially commit to Him. Prove your sacrificial commitment by keeping, (guarding, treasuring) His words. ALL of them. As we treasure His Word and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us, Jesus will come to us and he will not only be more evident to us, but more evident to those around us as well.

James, the Son of Alphaeus: The Careful Reading of Scripture
# 308 - Today we read from Mr 3:18, “Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.”
Next on the list of appointed disciples is James the son of Alphaeus. This is a very difficult Apostle to track down. Some have made him out to be James the “brother of the Lord.” I have a hard time accepting that theory because of what is written in Jn 7:5, “For not even His brothers believed in Him.” it would seem unlikely that an unbelieving brother would've taken up with this band of disciples.
James, “the brother of Jesus” would come to faith after the resurrection of Jesus. Perhaps on the occasion of His special appearance to James as recorded in 1 Cor 15:7, “Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles.”
There are other theories about the identity of this “James the son of Alphaeus,” but they are just that....theories. And if James the son of Alphaeus can teach us anything let it be that sometimes the Scriptures are silent on these matters.
It is enough to know that James, the son of Alphaeus was one of the original twelve apostles. If the Holy Spirit would've wanted us to know more about him, we would find it in the Scriptures.
Better to let the Scriptures remain silent on some matters, than to craft tales to support frivolous theology.

Some have made him out to be James the “brother of the Lord.” I have a hard time accepting that theory because of what is written in Jn 7:5, “For not even His brothers believed in Him.” it would seem unlikely that an unbelieving brother would've taken up with this band of disciples.
James, “the brother of Jesus” would come to faith after the resurrection of Jesus. Perhaps on the occasion of His special appearance to James as recorded in 1 Cor 15:7, “Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles.”
There are other theories about the identity of this “James the son of Alphaeus,” but they are just that....theories. And if James the son of Alphaeus can teach us anything let it be that sometimes the Scriptures are silent on these matters.
It is enough to know that James, the son of Alphaeus was one of the original twelve apostles. If the Holy Spirit would've wanted us to know more about him, we would find it in the Scriptures.
Better to let the Scriptures remain silent on some matters, than to craft tales to support frivolous theology.

Fearless Thomas
# 307 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:18, “Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.”
Let's spend one more day looking at Thomas. Everyone refers to him as “doubting Thomas” but I believe that's a bad rap. I'd rather call him “Courageous Thomas.” let me give you a couple of reasons.
Have you ever wondered why He missed the first appearance of Jesus behind closed doors? It was because he wasn't “behind closed doors.” The others were behind closed doors we are told “for fear of the Jews.” Apparently Thomas wasn't as afraid.
Still another more telling incident occurs after the news of the death of Lazarus reached Jesus. (Jn 11:1-16) Jesus said, “Lazarus has died and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE. But let us go to him.” To return to Bethany was very dangerous, the Jews were looking to kill Jesus, but the only disciple who spoke up was Thomas and he said, “Let us also go that we may die with Him.” (Jn 11:16)
Why would he be willing to do that? Because Jesus associated His return to Bethany with some kind of opportunity to believe, to strengthen faith. (Jn 11:15) Thomas seized it. I don't call that a doubter. I call that someone who was always fearlessly looking for opportunities to strengthen his faith.
Oh, that we would do the same. Oh that we would learn to fearlessly trust God's promises and obey His Word, thereby exercising and strengthening our own faith.

Gutsy Thomas
# 306 - Today's Living Word comes from Mr 3:18, “Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.”
Next on our list of the apostles is Thomas, also called “Didymus.” which means twin. We have no biblical record of when or how Thomas received the call to follow Jesus.
But one incident dogs him in the minds of all who read the Scriptures. It occurred on the evening of the resurrection. The disciples were gathered in the upper room, “for fear of the Jews,” but Thomas wasn't with them. (Jn 20:19) Jesus appeared to the other disciples at this time, and they later told Thomas that they had seen the risen Lord and he replied, “Unless I see in His hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into His side, I will never believe.” (Jn 20:25)
From that moment on, we have labeled him as “doubting Thomas.” Personally, I think it's a bad rap. I would rather call him something like courageous Thomas, or “fearless Thomas.
Think about it. It took a lot of guts to stand up and question the words of his companions of the last several years. What was he really saying? He was saying, “ I need more than your words and experience for proof!”
Oh that more in the church would be willing to bring up the tough questions with their peers. More willing to go to the law and the testimony for surety! Isa 8:20 says, “to the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”
If we had the guts of Thomas, maybe we wouldn't be so quick to quietly accept the ungodly practices that have become so prevalent in the church today. Sparks will likely fly, but they usually do when iron sharpens iron. Just remember to “speak the truth in love.”
Thomas struggled with belief, but he was fearless in his pursuit of it. More on this tomorrow.
